Study Without Stress is a small-group evidence-based program designed to help students develop practical strategies to manage academic pressure, overcome procrastination, and approach exams with greater confidence, ultimately reducing study stress.

Study Without Stress has been evaluated in research conducted in Sydney schools. The program has been shown to effectively reduce study stress and distress associated with HSC study skills. Additionally, it increases students’ confidence in managing their studies and improves academic self-efficacy.

Causes, symptoms, and the role of stress in academic performance are crucial for students to understand, especially when it comes to HSC study skills. Managing stressful thoughts and challenging expectations and beliefs about study can significantly reduce study stress. Achieving a healthy study/life balance is essential, as are relaxation techniques that help alleviate pressure. Effective timetabling is key to preparing for exams and managing procrastination, avoidance, and perfectionism. Problem-solving strategies are also included. Students receive the Study Without Stress workbook, which features exercises and tools specifically designed to enhance their HSC study skills and address academic stress throughout the program.

Students currently in Year 11 or Year 12 looking to enhance their HSC study skills and manage study stress effectively.


Format


• Small groups (maximum 10 students)

• 6 weekly sessions

• Each session runs for 1.5 hours, focusing on academic strategies to reduce stress and improve study techniques.

Meet the Program Facilitator

Catherine Lowe

Catherine Lowe is a psychologist with 20 years of experience supporting young people in managing study stress. She worked as a school psychologist in the independent school sector for over 15 years, where she focused on enhancing HSC study skills. Catherine was part of the team at Macquarie that developed and evaluated the 'Study without Stress' program. Her research on academic stress and the effectiveness of the 'Study without Stress' program has been published in scientific journals.
